ENGAGING OUR COMMUNITIES!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD!

EXPLORE THIS: When you think about life after college, do you see a great big question mark? Are you confused about which direction you’ll go, or do you want to go to so many places you can’t choose which is right for you? If you have so many interests that you can’t pick just one to focus on, or if you have no idea what to do for the rest of your life, then this FIG is for you! Be introduced to the hundreds of majors a Penn State student can experience. Figure out how to be a successful student and the tools available to help you explore the places you’ll want to go.

Explore This! FIG students are enrolled in the following courses:

Freshman Seminar: Exploring Penn State Majors and Opportunities (1 credit)

This course will introduce students to college survival skills, provide instruction on how to become a successful college student, and raise awareness of the various campus and university services from athletics to campus ministry to the Study Abroad program and free tutoring, all designed with the student’s success in mind.

Linked Course: ENGL 015 Rhetoric and Composition (3 credits)*

Instruction and practice in writing expository prose that shows sensitivity to audience and purpose.

*Enrollment in the linked course for Explore This! Is dependent on the score earned on the English proficiency examination administered as part of the Freshman Testing program. For more information, please contact the Division of Undergraduate Studies at 814-898-6260.

ENGAGING OUR COMMUNITIES: Do you want to make a difference in the world?  Are you interested in discussing how to give back to your community?  This FIG will assist you in exploring how to connect what you learn in the classroom to opportunities in the community.  Discover how much your education can and should provide real value to your community.  Learn the skills to gather information and solve world problems.  Start making a difference in your community today.

Engaging Our Communities FIG students are enrolled in the following courses:

Freshman Seminar: From College to Community (1 credit)

Students come to college to broaden their horizons and learn important skills that they will take back to their communities.  In this seminar an interdisciplinary group of faculty will introduce students to college life and to the cycle of public scholarship.  What we learn in any major has little value unless it provides real value to the community.  In turn the communities around us provide a real world laboratory where ideas can be turned into reality.  Learn the skills to gather information, build allies, and plan and evaluate programs to solve real world problems.

Linked Course: YFE 211 Foundations: Civic and Community Engagement (3 credits)*

YFE 211 will teach fundamental concepts of the land-grant university, service learning and civic engagement to help students understand what it means to be civically engaged and how civic engagment can facilitate political or social change in society.
